Read them in sequence
A set of 72 Family Readers are designed to be read in sequence from 1 to 72. Each storybook presents new word patterns and reviews previously taught words.
A first lesson for beginning, struggling, or English as a Second Language readers is designed with basic vowels and blends that makes sense for frequent use. The first storybook starts with just one word on each page.
Produce an independent reader
The Family Readers are planned so if a student begins with books one and reads through the 72 books, he or she will cover the phonetic elements to become an independent reader.
Teach values
Values (such as honesty or relationships) are incorporated into each book. Storybook characters model the values as the enjoyable story plots develop.
Sequentially master long and short vowels
The lessons build sequentially and students increase their skills and confidence as the text develops.
- The first 36 short vowel books introduce and review skills, that when mastered provide students with a substantial reading base.
- The short vowels, along with connecting site words, are taught first.
- The long and variant vowels with the initial and final constant blends are taught in the remaining 36 books.
Read and understand over 2,500 words
There are over 2,500 words introduced in the Family Readers. Children increase reading skills by starting with simple words and progressing through a more advanced vocabulary. Reading is a process involving the discovery of new words by the reader.
